Viva K

self-titled

Contributor: Joel Edelman

This is a tricky album to figure out. The focus is not on the singing, but the music doesn't really impress on its own either. But when you put them together and listen to the chorus on tracks such as "Guru," it starts to fit together. The whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

Viva K's self-titled release wants to rock, but the music is often just a bit too fun for that. My friends really got into this album, but I was not always sharing in the glory. I sense angst when listening, but I cannot locate it. This proves irritating and distracting.

When I first heard this album, I thought it was pretty good, but it is very forgettable. The tracks don't seem to have any continuity, and although they do not sound alike, the differences between them are hard to identify.

"Does It Matter?" is a little heavier on the keyboard, and this makes a big difference. I still can get into this track, which I can't really say about some of the others. It isn't worth buying the album for just this track, but it's damn close.

Generally, the more-electronic tracks are better. Perhaps the members of Viva K like electronic music but wanted to do a rock album. When they perform the songs that were more inspired by their supposed musical tastes, it totally shines through.
