Rockrgrl Discoveries 2005
Rockrgrl was a music festival in the Pacific Northwest in November 2005. This compilation features 16 of the acts that played there.
Like most compilations, the best songs are early on, because people listen to albums in order and have no attention span. This was never an issue when we all listened to cassettes. Bastards.
Salme Dahlstrom leads off with "Hello California," a strange song to have on a Seattle, Washington-based compilation. It's a good song, but it is sort of goofy with the sudden synths and samples. These gimmicks actually harm a great song, which is depressing.
Marianne Pillsbury is on here with "Boo Hoo." I already fucking love this song, and nothing has changed. I still want to bear her children.
Fur Cups for Teeth are going to be my new best friends. "Mystery Train" is an absolutely phenomenal song. It has a nice danceable beat with great female licks, but not diva-style. The keyboard gives it sort of a Nintendo appearance, but not in a pandering way. People aren't going to be writing in their LiveJournals about this song because of its ability to PWN.
And the lyrics are just cute. And silly. And serious. All in one song! Yeesh. Give me more!
Almost all the tracks are good, and I am not going to trash the ones that aren't. I don't want to write that much. Soandsos' "Better" is another standout track, however. Good for them.
If you can get ahold of this compilation, you'll have a nice mini-concert in your pants, provided your iPod is in your Levi's pocket.
