Various ArtistsProtect: A Benefit for the National Association to Protect ChildrenContributor: ValentineAccording to the Fat Wreck Chords Web site, this one’s for the kids, for real. According to Protect’s Web site, the bands on this album are donating the songs so that the proceeds go directly to Protect. I guess that means that this is really and truly for the kids. After all, who is going to look after the kids? According to Protect, because kids don’t vote, politicians don’t care. I’ve heard this many times, and I believe it to be true. Somebody has to stick up for the kids. But this is a CD, right? So I guess I should review it. Um, I guess it is what you would expect from Fat Wreck Chords bands. There are 26 tracks, 15 of which are “previously unreleased/rare.” I would have to say that I enjoy about half the songs on this thing, regardless of their rarity. There are some really good punk rock songs on here, some really good pop-punk songs and some really good songs by punk/pop-punk people doing that solo thing. Matt Skiba comes to mind. I loved Alkaline Trio until recently. Their recent output has left me less than thrilled but whatever. This Skiba track sounds like old Alkaline Trio that maybe didn’t make the cut for a record. I am guessing that when bands lend their stuff to a comp, it tends to be of this caliber if it is “rare.” If you are a fan, you usually don’t care what the band thought of the track though. I liked some songs on here a lot, some songs are good enough, and some are from those bands that scream, and I just hit skip. There is enough to keep me interested, though. For six bucks, you can’t go wrong. You’re helping a good cause and you’re not getting bored by hearing the same band for 26 tracks. You can contact the author at: valentine@agouti.com 931 |
