20 Nights of Wine and Song
Despite being called 20 Nights of Wine and Song, there are only 14 tracks on this compilation. I guess six of the songs are so good that they deserve two nights of complementary (and hopefully complimentary) wine.
I took this album because it has a Bronwyn track. I like Bronwyn. "Two Hearts in the Night" sounds like all their other stuff, and if you're an obsessed fan, then you have to pick this up so you have it. Those are the rules.
Minmae's "Box of Cassettes" is really lo-fi, but it's also really good. The guitar is simple and effective. It really makes me think of the Northwest, which makes sense.
Every track on this compilation is from a group, except for John Larsen. "Drift" really knocked me for a loop. You could play this song -- or at least the beginning of it -- in a haunted house. It's not spooky in its own right, but as background music, it can really creep you out. I don't know how they do that.
Books on Tape (not to be confused with "Box of Cassettes") remind me musically of some old Charlatans U.K. stuff with "Slinky Slur." I think I like this song better than Bronwyn, and that says a lot. It has neat keyboard stuff and would sound great in a club at 3:14 a.m. Waiting until 3:15 a.m. would be fatal.
Unlike a lot of compilations, this doesn't have a bunch of crap on it. Go give it a shot. I don't give a shit.
