Onelinedrawing

The Volunteers

Contributor: James Song

In what would be Jonah Matranga’s final release as onelinedrawing, this veteran songwriter crafts elegant and decidedly mature tales with a little less R2D2 that are a little more varied. However, the tracks are still quite analog and engaging. It seems easy to say that this release is not much different from previous onelinedrawing albums, which it isn’t, but for some reason, the similarities are what makes this engaging. Matranga has such a buttery-smooth voice that he could sing over a trip-hop remix of a Lil Jon song, and you would buy it.

That is what is compelling about Matranga -- his constant and consistent quality. Far were such a kick-ass band that it collapsed on itself. New End Original are just good rock music. Onelinedrawing was the requisite emo-licious side of a man just trying to create good music, whatever genre you want to put it in. His career is not about resurrecting a past era, voicing controversial social platforms or creating style. Matranga is here to play music -- his music -- and he wouldn’t mind if you took a listen.

Where The Volunteers shines is as a collection of really good songs. It's nothing earth-shattering, yet songs such as "We Had a Deal" will remind you of how good and fun music can be. The track "Livin’ Small" seems to sum it up pretty well.

The Volunteers is a fitting end to one of the most overlooked musical acts during the past seven years. Matranga has so many projects going that I’m confident that we won’t be losing his voice anytime soon. If you’ve never heard onelinedrawing, pick up Visitors first, and you’ll appreciate The Volunteers that much more. If you’re old school, you’ve probably already seen Matranga solo or his band Gratitude live. Either way, be sure to grab this album.
