Mistic Rein
Deja Voodoo
I suppose this is well-crafted. I had trouble getting into it. I don't feel as if I am supposed to listen to music like this. I mean, it's just a bunch of drums and guitars and keyboards and vocals, but when I listen to it, I feel that I was not supposed to have this album. I cannot identify with it at all. Maybe it's the sitar.
The songs are really long, but they flow pretty well. The keyboards do what they are supposed to do: lubricate the song. When I was 14, I was listening to music like this, I think. But I was listening to Kon Kan.
The sound is quite sensual, and that could be what makes it so hard for me to identify with. I don't like sensual things unless they are specifically directed at me. I have no chance to sleep with the lead singer of Mistic Rein, so the band's sensuality is lost on me.
The title track is neat. All the tracks are. "The One" sounds like an orchestrated version of music from The Legend of Zelda, but I do not want fans of that game to get this CD solely for that reason, only to e-mail me and say that I don't know what I am talking about. If I want a GameCube, I will put my Super Nintendo in the freezer.
"If You Were Mine" is not a Prince cover. That is Marianne Pillsbury's job. The quality of singing, already good, is great on this track. Iris Mareina, the one I want to sleep with but can't because I have no chance with her, can really sing.
If you like female singers and nontraditional (from an American perspective) music, this is a good example of it. I want more melody and harmonizing. Then this would be one of my favorite bands ever.
