Keep Your Heart

Contributor: Valentine

I hate to say this again, but I’m going to call The Loved Ones good old fashioned punk rock. Have I said that in a review yet? Probably. It’s not even a good way to describe Keep Your Heart, though, because there are various genres within punk rock. This isn’t pop-punk. This isn’t gutter punk or street punk. This isn’t 77 punk. This is just rock music that is raw.

The vocals on Keep Your Heart are great. They are sung, but not in a whiny or dramatic way. They fluctuate musically, without doing anything extra to gloss them over, such as snarling. The drums and guitars just pound out the rhythm. Nothing pretty but, again, nothing detracting either. They are just there in their raw form. There are some occasional lead parts thrown in on guitar that are appropriate enough, not lasting longer than a few bars.

These songs are good, without being too poppy. I keep using the word “raw,” because that seems like the best way for me to describe this. I don’t know whether everyone would call this punk rock, but I do. If you like your music to come from Philadelphia and contain former members of Kid Dynamite, The Curse and even Paint It Black, then check this out. It sounds good loud.
