Lullaby for an Astronaut

Contributor: Joel Edelman

Kelli Hanson runs a nice balance of voice and accompaniment on Lullaby for an Astronaut. Every time I listen to this album, it's a little better, and a little more intense. Subtleties of guitar and keyboards emerge ever-stronger on each subsequent listen.

The style is definitely reminiscent of mid-'90s college rock. I refuse to make PJ Harvey analogies, but there is some dark guitar going on in "Papillon de Nuit."

When a singer has a good voice, producers will often overmix their voice or keep it in too loud so everyone notices it, and in some cases, that's a good idea. But if you have a variety of instruments focusing on what they each do best, it is a disservice to drown them out with vocals, no matter how good they are. None of this happens here.

With a title such as Lullaby for an Astronaut, you expect to hear sleepy tunes, so there is no disappointment here. Many tracks tell interesting stories, and you can't help but feel that you are gazing into Hanson's eyes or soul or whatever.

"Nightswimming" is slightly darker and more percussive, but Hanson does a good job singing with it. She uses multiple singing styles, and I hope that she picks this direction in her future work.

Even if you are not an astronaut, if you would like some nice cuddling music, this is the way to go.
