In the Wildflowers and Weeds

Listening to this album crashed my broswer, but why should you care? Julia Lau does an excellent Paula Cole impression on In the Wildflowers and Weeds, but what does it all mean?

Well, there's plenty of low- and midtempo tunes on the album, and some of them run together a bit, but her voice is so even-keeled that it's not a problem. "Pretty Please" exemplifies this, but again, many of the songs do.

"To Be Beautiful" has a little more pep and is just way more fun than any other song on the album. I don't know why Lau would bury this at the end, because this is the direction that she should be going in. Maybe it's a sign of things to come, so that's why she put it where she did. I guess time will tell.

"The Sun Sets" stands apart from the rest of the slower songs. The musicianship is very deliberate, but it does not lose its soul in the process. This is a challenge, because when things become calculated, they can become stiff.

This album has tons of love songs. "Look Into Her" appears to be about someone else. It could just be a casual observation of someone getting on BART, or maybe it's a homeless person. It's not really clear, but maybe it's intentionally left as an exercise for the listener.

If you like slower music with above-average melodic singing, this is made for you.
