Get It to Go

It's amazing how things have changed since 2003. The Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox won the World Series. Pepsi One still exists, but not at convenience stores. And, most relevantly, The Jolenes have grown up.

With fancy producing and recording, The Jolenes have released their second full-length album, Get It to Go. On it, they have somehow skipped the angst stage and gone straight from girly pop to grown-up serious-enough rock 'n' roll.

I miss the pop that they did so well before, but they can be serious just fine. In fact they do it quite well.

The first track is "Ice Cream," and it sounds the most like their old stuff. Full of sprinkles and Gummi Bears, you just can't go wrong with this instant classic.

"Pedro" has horns but not in a ska sense. It's just this weird, goofy melodic piece of work. It's my favorite song on the album. The highlights are the intentionally bad Spanish accent at the end, when one of the members asks where her pencil sharpener, bathroom and car are, all in Spanish.

"Poison" is my second-favorite song. It has the guitar jangle that I expect from bands that I like. For me it's as distinctive as the beat in any reggae song. If I hear that jangle, I know it's a good song, no matter what, just like Orbit gum. The line "don't mess with Texas/don't mess with me" is particularly fun.

The Jolenes offer me almost everything I could want from a band, and although I miss the sugary sensibilities of their older work, they do just find in this world of Diet Coke and Reduced-Fat Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia.
