Girl Without Fear
Mix Messages
You get a real mixed bag on Mix Messages. Girl Without Fear either don't like iced tea or the album is a command to take some messages and change their order.
"Avalanche" is the first track, and it's boring. "Sundown" is a good song, and coming right after the first track, it sounds even better.
Once the lead singer of The Cardigans learned English, she started to sing the way that the lead singer of Girl Without Fear sings. It's not to say that Girl Without Fear sound like The Cardigans, but there is definitely a similarity in style.
Speaking of similar styles, "Ashes to Roses" sounds like a redheaded Book of Love song. This is my favorite song on the album. It belongs on a movie soundtrack. When I get the girl, I know I will want this song playing in the background. There's no way she wouldn't put out.
"Another Summer" has great music. The back-and-forth vocals are fine, although they are slightly distracting. There is a very San Francisco feel to this song. I dare say this would be better served with a 45-second bridge so people can really enjoy the music. Maybe when they play it live they can go wank it out on their instruments for a while and pretend to be a jam band.
So there's a lot going on here, and some of it is pretty good. I prefer my albums to have a bit more focus, but there's nothing inherently wrong with any of these songs.
