Daniel Striped Tiger

Condition

Contributor: Valentine

I had a hard time finding anything out about Daniel Striped Tiger. When I went to their Web site, it said their domain name had been suspended or something. I don’t remember, but it’s not important. All that matters is the music on Condition, right? Right.

This is some good stuff. Noisy and hard, with occasional moments of calm, probably describe this to the best of my ability. The vocals are yelled all the time. Not my favorite but it makes up for it more than adequately with the music. I enjoy music that keeps you guessing, and Condition does that a bit. It is not entirely off the wall, but it doesn’t follow any formulas. It ranges from being pretty hard to getting noisy to being kind of mathematical at times. Sometimes it does two or three of those all at once.

Sometimes, some samples come into play. At least, I’m guessing that the backward-sounding thing is a sample. A couple of other things don’t sound like the typical hardcore rhythm section, that is, a keyboard, which make for breaks in the craziness. I think this would be considered experimental if it weren’t for the yelled vocals. That is the one thing you can always count on. Maybe having one consistent thing isn’t enough to not be experimental, but it was the one thing that stuck out to me as being monotonous. It is the only thing that might get to me after listening to this over and over.

So, yelling aside, Condition is great. It’s all over the place but manages to maintain coherency. Maybe the yelling keeps it together, but I think it is more than that. It contains a pretty consistent do-it-yourself sonic quality as well. Even though I am not normally into hardcore, this album has grown on me.
