Bagheera
Twelves
Holy crap, this is good. It's only May, but this is my front-runner for album of the year. The last time I got this excited about a band with girl-boy lyrics was when I heard Blake Babies for the first time. Now don't get me wrong. The lead singer of Bagheera sounds nothing like Juliana Hatfield, but she still sounds great. On Twelves, Bagheera re-prove the theory that bands using numbers are as awesome as AWESOM-O, but without the need to release oil waste products. Fart smell sequence initiated, indeed.
"Isolation in an Accelerating Universe" is a rare male-led track, but it is my favorite. This should be a shocker. I dig the chick singers of the world, but this song gets it right. It's for Dinosaur Jr fans everywhere. Yes, it's that good. It doesn't sound like Dinosaur Jr, but fans of them will like this.
There's 13 songs, and they are all good. All of them. There's some sort of weird calendar thing going on. A song is called "H for Halloween," and another is "The Halloween Disguise." Yet another is titled "Not Chasing Ghosts." I guess that song must be about waiting for The Great Pumpkin. I mean when he comes! Oh, no. I'm doomed.
It's all fucking great. I don't know how to pronounce the name of the band, but I would love for the female lead singer to sit with me and tell me all about it. How about over a decaf latte with soy milk? I'm excited already.
P.S. "Admission/Concession" is even better than "Isolation in an Accelerating Universe." Really.
