Anna Oxygen

This Is an Exercise

Contributor: Joel Edelman

Sometimes I review several crappy albums in a row, and I become disillusioned and wonder whether it really is worth all the pizza that I eat if all I am going to review is a bunch of junk.

Then the package from Kill Rock Stars comes, and all is right with the world.

Anna Oxygen mixes her utilitarian singing with happy keyboards and drum machines and comes up with This Is an Exercise. I would still go to clubs if they played music like this. This is an excellent album for those that miss Book of Love. And for those that miss the way Le Tigre used to be, this is an excellent album for sneaking them into liking dance music. Old-school Le Tigre fans are funny. They're so tough and everything, but they don't even understand how rhythmic their beloved were. Well, after listening to Le Tigre's self-titled album, you should get them to listen to This Is an Exercise, and if they say they don't like it, then they are full of shit. Depeche Mode CDs in the $3.95 bin are right around the corner.

There's some weirdo shit on this album, too. "Mechanical Fish" has some etherial, surreal conversation that makes no sense, while nice dance music plays in the background. It's like floating an omelette over a fondue pot. Two great tastes that run parallel still taste great, as long as they stay parallel! That means they will never intersect, after all.

This is a very strong album and is very stimulating to the nerve centers in your brain!
